The Best and Most Popular Cannabis Seed Strains of 2024

The best and most popular feminized cannabis seed strains to buy online and grow in 2024. Top 12 strains ranked and reviewed based on potency, yield, and popularity.
Author: Jason Oliver

The first thing you’ll notice when browsing any online seed bank is that the selection is just huge. Overwhelmingly huge, especially if you’re a new grower. With all the different types of seeds, strain names, breeders, and even strains with the same names but different breeders, it can get confusing fast!

There are regular seeds then there are feminized and after that, there’s autoflower. Some are sativa while others are indica. Some will do better indoors while others will only get worthwhile yields outdoors. Then there’s the flavor, effect, flowering time, plant height, yield, potency and so on. With so many options, how can anyone choose the best cannabis seeds to buy online?

What Makes the Best Cannabis Seeds?

With so many great strains out there, how does one choose the absolute best? Well, while everyone has different preferences when it comes to things like effects, flavor, and grow setup, pretty much everyone wants great yields and potent buds, right?

Right. That’s why the 12 strains on this list have all been ranked and reviewed based on these three factors:

  1. Potency – Who wants to go through all the work of growing and harvesting just for some weak weed? No thank you. Strains that make it on to this list must be potent.
  2. Yield – Growing low-yielding seeds is about as pointless as spending a whole day in the kitchen slaving over a single chocolate chip cookie. If you’re going to put all that work into making something, you want to get a lot of it! All the strains on our list pump out great yields.
  3. Popularity – Some things can’t be measured exactly, which is why we also rank these strains based on their general popularity. Sometimes, a strain can seem like nothing special on paper, when you’re just looking at the numbers, but when you experience it yourself, it’s totally different! The popularity category accounts for that special “x factor” that some strains have.

Each of these reviews will cover all the key details you need to determine if they’re a good match for you and your home grow setup. That way everyone can make an informed decision about the seeds they choose to buy, knowing that they’ll be able to grow and enjoy them in the end.

1. Gelato

Gelato Feminized Cannabis Seeds

  • Feminized Seeds, 25%+ THC
  • Hybrid Strain, Dense & Sticky Buds
  • 500-600g/m², Flowering in 8-10 Weeks
  • Instant Pleasing Relaxation Effect
  • Amazing Citrus-Candy-Fruit Flavor
  • Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor
  • Moderate Growing Difficulty

Gelato is often hailed as one of the best cannabis seed strains to buy and grow in 2024, and part of that comes from its lineage as part of the well known Girl Scout Cookies family.

Derived from Girl Scout Cookies and Sunset Sherbet, Gelato is the best of both worlds. It is extremely potent, with THC level of 25% and higher when grown with plenty of light and space! The high you get from this strain is almost immediate, with a sense of calm, relaxation, and giggly euphoria will wash over you after the first few puffs.

Not only is it potent, Gelato is also one of the best tasting strains out there. In full flower, it has a flavor reminiscent of berries and candy. Some also report faint hints of citrus as well.

Gelato is suitable for growing both indoors and outdoors, but it can be a little bit tricky. We’d call it about a moderate difficulty. Not the most difficult, but it might give you a hard time if you don’t have at least a few grows under your belt.

Gelato Feminized plants are around 120-180cm tall, and takes roughly 8 to 10 weeks to flower. Yield can go up to 500-600 grams/m² of dense, sticky buds with the right conditions, which is well worth the time and effort it takes to grow.

When you grow it indoors, it has a pungency that you may need to cover with air filters or fans. Outside, it requires consistent warm and humid temperatures.

2. Gorilla Glue

Gorilla Glue Feminized Seeds

  • Feminized Seeds, 25-30% THC(!)
  • Hybrid Strain, Fat Sticky Buds
  • 600g+/m², Flowering in 7-9 Weeks
  • Euphoric But Yet Calming Effect
  • Great for Stress and Pain Relief
  • Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor
  • Easy to Grow, Strong Plant

One of the most popular seed strains in 2019 – The modern Gorilla Glue strain is an American multi-generation hybrid and one of the best cannabis seed strains to buy online. In terms of potency, it’s just as strong as its namesake, with THC levels of up to 30 percent! It takes some skill to grow it at that level, but even if you miss the mark, you can see levels around 22-25%. When it comes to high THC seeds, these are some of the best for inexperienced growers and old hands alike.

Even though the THC is crazy high, this strain won’t keep you couchlocked all night. You’re not necessarily going to be dancing around either, but you’ll get a strong sense of clear-headed euphoria. This strain can also be used medicinally, and it’s great for relieving stress, pain, and anxiety, while keeping you functional.

With a flowering time of roughly 7-9 weeks, Gorilla Glue has two defining traits:

The first is its large size. If left untouched, you can see heights as high as 220 centimeters! As a result, while you can grow it indoors and outdoors, you need to give this plant a wide berth and stay on top of trimming it. Outdoor growers should note that this is also a very hardy plant due to its multi-generational heritage.

The second major point is the sheer stickiness of the buds. The amount of resin this strain produces is another reason for its name, so you’d better wear gloves when you harvest your sticky bounty. The Gorilla Glue Feminized plant can yield above 600 grams/m² which will keep you well-stocked for quite a while.

3. Sunset Sherbet

Sunset Sherbet Feminized Cannabis Seeds

  • Feminized Seeds, 25% THC
  • Indica Dominant, Dense & Resinous Buds
  • 500-600g/m², Flowering in 8-10 Weeks
  • Energizing/Creative/Body Buzz Effect
  • Fruity Flavor, Great Daytime Strain
  • Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor
  • Moderate-Hard Growing Difficulty

Sunset Sherbet is a sativa-dominant hybrid strain with a powerful pedigree. Bred from the iconic Durban Poison, OG Kush and Cherry pie strains along with the indica Pink Panties strain, it is certainly one of the top cannabis seed strains.

Being a hybrid, you get the best of both worlds when it comes to effects. Sunset Sherbet boasts a 25% THC level, so the immediate effect is energizing and uplifting, but the initial high mellows into a light and calming stone that will leave you in control, focused, and up for anything – Sunset Sherbet is a great daytime strain, also suitable for wake-and-bake.

While the effects are well balanced in this hybrid, in terms of growth shape and pattern, Sunset Sherbet’s indica genetics tend to take over. This means that you’ll see a height of between 120-180 cm, as well as an even spread of different codas along the branches.

Outdoors, it needs consistently humid climates. In both indoor and outdoor settings, you should trim away broad fan leaves to ensure even light distribution.

Generally, Sunset Sherbet Feminized plants take between 8-10 weeks to flower, and will yield around 500-600 grams/m² of dense and resinous buds in optimal growing conditions. Outdoor harvest is in late September, and with such a big yield you should have all you need for quite a while after that.

4. Bruce Banner #3

Bruce Banner #3 Feminized Marijuana Seeds

  • Feminized Seeds, 25%+ THC
  • Sativa Dominant, Long & Dense Buds
  • 500-600g/m², Flowering in 8-10 Weeks
  • Uplifting High, Great for Wake & Bake
  • Strong Classic Sativa Flavor
  • Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor
  • Moderate Growing Difficulty

This sativa strain is the most popular of the 3 Bruce Banner phenotypes and combines some elements from the classic OG Kush strain with the taste of Strawberry Diesel. The taste and potency are what have taken it above the other two.

Many people report that Bruce Banner #3 has the powerful taste associated with its Diesel lineage, with a general lemon-lime aroma that also has a slight element of sweetness at times. When smoked, the aroma tends to relax a little.

However, the most notable element when it comes to Bruce Banner #3 is its THC potency. Levels of 25% or even higher have been noted in optimal growing conditions. This strain is perfect for a nice wake and bake. After a few hits, it will leave you feeling uplifted and euphoric. You’ll also start to feel a full body buzz and increased creativity. The perfect way to start your day!

Bruce Banner #3 reaches heights of 180-200 cm, so when growing indoors – you will need to give it enough vertical space to properly grow unless you are familiar with plant training / trimming. Along with this, it’s been known to be demanding in terms of nutrition. It does flower relatively quickly, though, between 8-10 weeks. Overall, this would be classified as a moderate difficulty grow, best suited for at least intermediate growers, or brave beginners who aren’t afraid to either ask for help or accept below-average results.

Bruce Banner #3 Feminized plants give around 500-600 grams/m² of yield at top levels. Novice growers will probably get closer to 400 grams/m².

5. Girl Scout Cookies

Girl Scout Cookies Feminized Weed Seeds

  • Feminized Seeds, 22-24% THC
  • Legendary Strain, Cannabis Cup Winner
  • Indica Dominant, Amazing Flavor
  • 400-500g/m², Flowering in 8-10 Weeks
  • Long Lasting Body Buzz / Cerebral Effect
  • Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor
  • Moderate Growing Difficulty

Originating in Northern California, the Cannabis Cup-winning Girl Scout Cookies has become one of the best and most popular seed strains among cannabis growers, with a combination of top flavor and potency. It’s also a favorite starting point for blending new strains, and a few of the strains on this list even have a little Girl Scout Cookie in ‘em.

The name of this indica-dominant strain is no exaggeration, as its flavor is truly reminiscent of a chocolatey, baked treat. In terms of consumption, this is a great strain to get started with. Whether you’re using it recreationally or medicinally, the experience is pleasant from start to finish. The effects you can expect include a fast-acting head high followed by a more well-rounded body buzz. Make sure you’ve got some actual girl scout cookies on hand when you smoke this strain, because chances are good you’ll be wanting some!

In terms of potency, you can expect a THC level of around 22% on average, though numbers as high as 24% have been reported with the right growing conditions. This indica-dominant hybrid is believed to combine elements of OG Kush and Durban Poison, but its complete lineage is unknown.

As it grows, Girl Scout Cookies is on the medium side, reaching heights between 100 and 180 cm. Different sources may offer different information on the best way to grow these marijuana seeds, but generally, it’s easier to manage indoors with a soil or hydroponics setup.

Girl Scout Cookies Feminized plant has a flowering time of around 8-9 weeks and will yield of 400-500 grams/m² with optimal conditions. If you let it flower for a little longer, you have a better chance of hitting the high end of this range.

6. White Widow Max

White Widow Max Feminized Marijuana Seeds

  • Feminized Seeds, 19-22% THC
  • Hybrid Strain, Large Crystalline Buds
  • 500-600g/m², Flowering in 8-10 Weeks
  • Body Buzz Settling Into Couch Lock
  • Great for Stress & Depression Relief
  • Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor
  • Easy to Grow, Great for Beginners

White Widow Max is an improved version of the legendary award winning hybrid strain White Widow, with improved yield as well as higher potency levels of up to 22% (with optimal growing conditions, of course!) Naturally, the first thing you see with a flowering White Widow Max Feminized plant is the white blanket of heavy resin that gives it its name.

This strain provides a more intense version of the traditional White Widow taste, which is a heavy skunky flavor combined with notes of pepper and sandalwood. This is followed with a sweet note as well.

While you can technically grow White Widow Max Feminized indoors or outdoors, many experts recommend doing this indoors if you can. Having a hydroponic system in place is also ideal for these cannabis seeds Ideally, it should flower as close to the end of the 10-week span as possible, but it can start flowering as early as 8 weeks.

One thing that can make it difficult for indoor growers, though, is the fact that this is a taller strand, generally settling in a range of 180-220 cm. It may require a bit of plant training to make a proper fit – but still considered to be an easy grow that’s great for beginners, as long as you have the right setup!

When the plant is ready to harvest, you can expect around 500-600 grams/m² of yield. Just be sure to prepare for the heavy amount of sticky resin you’ll have to deal with while harvesting the buds. Not a bad problem to have.

7. Wedding Cake

Wedding Cake Feminized Weed Seeds

  • Feminized Seeds, 22-25% THC
  • Indica Dominant, Medical Strain
  • 500-600g/m², Flowering in 8-10 Weeks
  • Relaxation / Full Body Buzz Effect
  • Delicious Skunky/Earthy/Sweet Flavor
  • Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor
  • Easy to Grow, Great for Beginners

This indica-dominant hybrid is a combination of the classic Girl Scout Cookies strain and Cherry Pie. The result is one of the best cannabis seeds around, that’s big on flavor, yield, and potency as well.

But don’t let its Cherry Pie lineage fool you, that’s not what the flavor is really like. Instead, most people report a heavy sweetness, with an element of vanilla- kind of like a wedding cake! When smoked, you can expect earthy undertones with an element of pepper.

The Wedding Cake strain is sometimes known by other names, including Birthday Cake or Pink Cookies. Hey, we told you cannabis seeds can be complicated!

Whether used for recreational or medicinal purposes, Wedding Cake is high in THC potency, reaching levels of 25% at the upper end of its range. It’s great for aches and pains as well as regulating mood. Wedding Cake eases you from an uplifted high to a balanced body buzz- but it may also give you a bad case of the munchies, so be sure to have some snacks on hand!

Wedding Cake is a good fit for beginner growers. This is because it’s very resistant against diseases and pests. It’s also not that tall in terms of height, hitting a range of around 100-150 cm. It generally flowers after around 8-10 weeks.

Wedding Cake Feminized plant can be very generous in terms of yield, especially grown outdoors. In peak conditions, you can see a yield between 500-600 grams/m², though any grower should be able to get 400-450 grams/m² at least.

8. Purple Kush

Purple Kush Feminized Weed Seeds

  • Feminized Seeds, 20%+ THC
  • Pure Indica, Hard-Dense Purple Buds
  • 400-500g/m², Flowering in 8-10 Weeks
  • Relaxation Effect, Great for Insomnia
  • Kush Scent with Fruity Grape Flavor
  • Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor
  • Easy-Moderate Growing Difficulty

Purple Kush, a cross of Hindu Kush and Purple Afghani, is considered to be one of the best marijuana seed strains to buy online, both for medicinal and recreational uses. It is believed to have come into existence in Oakland, California, the birthplace of many great marijuana strains.

Purple Kush is a great choice if you’re in the market for a long-lasting euphoria effect along with blissful relaxation. Many people use it medicinally for help with pain management, stress reduction, or insomnia.

The THC potency of this strain can vary, but it’s definitely on the more powerful side of things, with 20% and even higher under the best growing conditions.

Similar to most indica plants, Purple Kush naturally grows low and bushy, usually up to 80-120 centimeters, but with strong light source and optimal growing conditions (and without plant training) – it might go up to 150-180cm. If you opt to grow it indoors, you can afford to grow several plants at once, even in a limited vertical space. Notably, this strain also makes a lot of resin, useful for hash or other concentrated products.

Purple Kush Feminized plant will yield up to 400-500 grams/m² in optimal growing conditions, and will be ready to harvest after an 8 week flowering time.

9. Durban Poison

Durban Poison Feminized Marijuana Seeds

  • Feminized Seeds, 19-22% THC
  • Pure Sativa, Cannabis Cup Winner
  • 500-600g/m², Flowering in 12-14 Weeks
  • Energetic/Uplifting/Creative High
  • Sweet/Pine Earthy Flavor
  • Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor
  • Easy to Grow, Great for Beginners

Durban Poison, an award winning strain, is notable as a pure sativa strain originating from South Africa. It is also pretty easy to grow, so it’s incredibly popular with experienced and novice growers alike.

You can expect your Durban Poison plants to give you THC levels of around 19-22% at the maximum. Most people find this to be the perfect range of potency to get the maximum effects of energy, an uplifted feeling, and greater creativity without ever feeling “too high.” It’s a classic sativa in terms of effects, and a great one at that!

For new growers who want to start off with one of the best and most well-known marijuana seed strains, Durban Poison Feminized is a great choice. It’s not too difficult to grow as long as you know the basics of what you’re doing.

It has a longer flowering period of around 12 to 14 weeks, making it easier to manage alongside other plants. However, one of the most appealing traits is how well the strain does well under artificial light. This means that people who are limited to indoor growing don’t have to worry about compromising quality in any way.

The one issue you may encounter with Durban Poison is its height. On one hand, this potentially means more buds can grow, but your growing area needs to have the vertical space, and you may need to spend time trimming and bending the thin branches. Durban Poison yields up to 500-600 grams/m² with optimal growing conditions.

10. Strawberry Cough

Strawberry Cough Feminized Cannabis Seeds

  • Feminized Seeds, 19-22% THC
  • 75% Sativa 25% Indica, Cup Winner
  • 400-500g/m², Flowering in 12-14 Weeks
  • Euphoric / Anti-Anxiety High
  • Sweet Fruity / Berries Flavor
  • Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor
  • Easy to Grow, Great for Beginners

In 2005, this sativa-dominant strain won the High Times Strain of the Year Award. If you thought it was popular before that, winning such a prestigious award only made this strain more popular!

As more and more cannabis lovers have grown and smoked this strain, its popularity has solidified it into one of the top 12 best weed seeds out there. Strawberry Cough is one of those seeds that’s pretty much ubiquitous everywhere, and lots of breeders have tried their hands at their own special versions of it.

The “strawberry” part of this strain’s name is well-earned, with the taste instantly recalling sweet berries and summer fruits. There’s an added complexity here with a sour fruit underpinning as well.

In terms of THC content, you can expect numbers between 19 and 22 percent. The effects are a good blend of indica and sativa characteristics, producing a euphoric high without feeling racy. This strain can also be great for reducing anxiety.

This plant can thrive well in indoor and outdoor settings, but there is one specific trait you need to be mindful of: the branches. Strawberry Cough tends to have branches that grow very far out. However, this robust structure helps to support the larger-than-average buds and this strain works pretty well with sea-of-green setups. Overall, Strawberry Cough is considered to be a newcomer-friendly strain.

At the end of its 12-14 week flowering span, Strawberry Cough Feminized plant will yield up to 400-500 grams/m² with optimal growing conditions.

11. Jack Herer

Jack Herer Feminized Marijuana Seeds

  • Feminized Seeds, 15-18% THC
  • Sativa Dominant, Cannabis Cup Winner
  • 400-500g/m², Flowering in 12-14 Weeks
  • Great for Depression and Anxiety Relief
  • Medical Strain, Earth/Pine Flavor
  • Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor
  • Easy-Moderate Growing Difficulty

If you’ve been in the marijuana scene for any length of time at all, you’ve almost certainly heard of Jack Herer. You may have even smoked it without realizing what it was!

This is another one of those strains that is just everywhere, with everyone having their own versions of it and different hybrids using its genetics coming out all the time. The original still can’t be beat though!

Jack Herer Feminized is one of the best cannabis seed strains out there, period. And it’s won plenty of awards to back up that claim!

In terms of THC content, you can expect potency of roughly 15%-18%. Effects of this sativa-dominant hybrid strain are mainly medicinal. Jack Herer is great for relieving depression and anxiety. This strain has definitely changed people’s lives!

It’s no wonder that tons of people would want to be able to grow this strain at home. Being able to grow your own medicine is a powerful thing! This is a relatively easy strain to grow, but it does have a few quirks that might push it into the intermediate difficulty range if you’re not careful about them.

First, the flowering time is 12 to 14 weeks, a bit longer than other strains, so you’ll need to make sure that you time your grow right, particularly if you’re growing outdoors. You wouldn’t want to be without your medicine for weeks while the buds finish or have an early frost wipe out your crop, would you? No way!

Another major point of concern is the fact that Jack Herer is one of the taller strains out there, generally reaching plant heights of around 180 cm all the way to 200 cm. When harvested, the average yield is around 400-500 grams, but it can often be lower. Even with a lower yield, this strain is worth the effort!

12. Purple Urkle

Purple Urkle Feminized Marijuana Seeds

  • Feminized Seeds, 15-18% THC
  • Nearly Pure Indica, Cannabis Cup Winner
  • 400-500g/m², Flowering in 10-12 Weeks
  • Medical Strain, Narcotic Relaxing Effect
  • Skunky Aroma with Fuity Flavor
  • Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor
  • Moderate Growing Difficulty

Purple Urkle is a nearly pure indica that has taken the medical marijuana community by storm. It is highly coveted for its unique, almost narcotic relaxing effect that’s invaluable in the treatment of sleep disorders and chronic pain.

Perhaps one of the most striking traits of Purple Urkle is its distinct, arresting appearance, with the traditional indica leaf configuration as well as an indigo hue. The more the plant flowers, the deeper the hue turns. In terms of potency, Purple Urkle generally gives you a THC content between 15% and 18%.

Purple Urkle Feminized plant generally takes between 10-12 weeks to flower and provides a yield of 400-500 grams. It is also suitable for indoor and outdoor growing, but you need to be mindful of how the plant tends to grow when setting up a space.

This strain generally grows in a bush style, only reaching heights of around 100-180 cm. There are a lot of broad fan leaves around the plant’s bottom, with a large coda in the center with the bulk of the actual buds. In addition, it tends to grow slower outdoors, no matter the light levels.

Purple Urkle is a moderately difficult strain to grow, especially if you need to grow outdoors or you’re used to more sativa strains. If that’s the case, or if you’re just a newer grower, you may want to give Jack Herer a try instead. It’s a medicinal strain too, but it’s a bit easier to grow.

Choosing the Best Cannabis Seeds

Of course, there’s more that goes into choosing the best cannabis seeds than just choosing a great strain. There’s actually a lot to consider, like:

  • What type of seed you want to buy – Regular, feminized, and autoflowering seeds all have their pros and cons, a subject that’s thoroughly covered in this cannabis seed guide.
  • Ensuring seed quality – Sometimes, you can end up with bad seeds, even if you buy a great strain. Whether it’s the fault of the breeder or the reseller, it saves a lot of time and hassle if you can weed out the bad seeds before you go to the trouble of trying to grow them.
  • Growing within your means – It’s important to know which strains match your level of expertise with growing. If you’re a beginner, don’t just dive in and try to grow your favorite strain without researching what it takes. You may soon find yourself way over your head!

What Type of Seed to Buy

There is a very detailed cannabis seed guide on exactly this topic, but if you’re too curious to click away, here’s a basic intro to the subject:

If you want the absolute easiest type of seeds to grow, choose autoflowering seeds – but be aware that you’re sacrificing a bit of yield and potency for the convenience of having the plants start the flowering process on their own. If you’re someone who wants to achieve the absolute highest THC possible for your strain, a. don’t buy autoflowering seeds and b. keep reading for some more tips on improving your potency. You may or may not be able to find the strains you want available in an autoflowering version as well, so keep that in mind too.

Feminized seeds offer a good balance between convenience and results. They eliminate the hassle of separating out male plants during your grow and inevitably missing a couple and ending up with seedy weed, and they also don’t make any compromises on potency or yield. If you’re not sure where to start, start with feminized seeds.

Regular seeds are the least convenient and beginner-friendly types of seeds. You may be drawn in by their cheaper price, but unless you really know what you’re doing and have plenty of experience doing it, don’t even bother with regular seeds. It will just be a waste of your time.

Ensuring Seed Quality

Unfortunately, bad seeds happen sometimes. No matter how reputable the breeder or seed bank you buy from or how great the strain is, it’s all too easy for a bad seed to sneak in with the good ones and accidentally get sent out to you as part of your order. In rarer cases, your whole order may be filled with bad seeds, which is not only a sign of a sketchy business but also quite a bit harder to spot, especially if it’s your first grow.

Of course, seeds can also go bad after you receive them from improper storage, fluctuating temperatures, and other things like that. Whenever you receive new seeds or start to germinate ones that you’ve been holding onto for a while, it’s a good idea to check and make sure that they’re good quality, healthy, and likely to grow.

This may seem like a time-consuming, unnecessary step, but it will actually save time and hassle in the long run that will otherwise be spent trying to coax bad seeds into growing well- something that will never, ever happen, no matter what you do.

So, anytime you’re about to start a grow, go through these easy steps to ensure that your seeds are up to snuff:

  1. Check the size – Size isn’t everything, but when it comes to weed seeds, it’s a pretty good indicator of general health. The largest seeds with a good shape are much more likely to do well than the runts of the litter.
  2. Check the shape – The best cannabis seeds are smooth, symmetrical teardrop or round shapes. Immature seeds tend to be lopsided, bumpy, or otherwise irregular.
  3. Check the color – The best seeds are dark brown, green or tan, while immature seeds are usually much lighter shades of yellow, white, or pale green. Dark spots or stripey patterns on the seeds are a good sign, as is a shiny surface.
  4. Check for hardness – A healthy marijuana seed should be smooth and hard on the outside. Seeds with shells that are soft or cracked are not going to grow very well.
  5. See if they float – This is a test to perform right before you’re about to plant the seed because it requires it to get wet, which isn’t a good thing for seeds that are going back into storage. It’s pretty simple- all you do is drop seeds into a shallow glass of water, wait an hour, and see if they’ve sunk. If they have, they should be good to go, while the seeds that are still floating are probably less than fresh. You can try to germinate them anyway if you want, but they probably won’t grow very well.

Going through this inspection process is an easy way to pick out the healthiest and most viable seeds.

Growing Within Your Means

If you’re a special kind of extra motivated person, having a terrible first grow where everything goes wrong because you chose a strain that was outside of your experience level could be just the motivation you needed to keep trying and eventually become a marijuana growing master. For the rest of is, a grow like that would probably be enough to make us never want to try again.

That’s why it’s so important to do your research before you grow any strain that you haven’t grown before. A few hours on the internet before you buy your seeds and start your grow can save you many more hours of headache and frustration trying to troubleshoot a grow problem that could have been prevented from day one.

Now, all this is not to say that you should always stick to the absolute easiest to grow strains out there and never try anything different. But before you do that, you need to know exactly where you are stepping. Look around for reviews of the strain to see if it’s a good fit for your particular setup and level of expertise. Learn from other growers about the common pitfalls and things to watch out for when growing a particular strain.

A Note About “Optimal Conditions”

When it comes to THC potency, a lot of these strains are listed with a number that can only be replicated under optimal conditions. In some cases, the THC potency that the average grower gets from the same cannabis seeds is significantly lower than the ranges that have been reported under “optimal conditions.”

So it’s understandable if you’re wondering what those mysterious “optimal conditions” actually are– after all, who doesn’t want their weed to be as potent as possible, right?

When you buy the best marijuana seeds, it’s understandable to want to get the best THC potency out of them. But to create an environment that meets the optimal conditions that produce those kinds of results, you’re going to need a little know-how, a little investment, and a whole lot of dedication to your plants.

You can spend a lifetime learning all of this stuff, but here are a few quick tips to get you started on the road toward optimal conditions:

  1. Don’t harvest too early – It can be tempting to pluck those buds as soon as they start to get sticky, but be strong and wait! The cannabanoid profile is changing all throughout the flowering stage, so hold off on harvesting until you see most of the pistils darken and curl up and most of the trichomes turning milky white. That’s when you’ve got the highest THC.
  2. Don’t overwater – A lot of experts say that decreasing the humidity in your grow room and being careful not to give your plants more water than they really need is a great way to up the THC levels in your finished product. It works by forcing the plant to create more resin to help seal in moisture, which boosts THC.
  3. Get your light right – The appropriate level of light cycling is something that weed seed growers can argue about for hours at a time. There’s no end in sight for that debate, but it is important to note that you’ll need to supply the exact right amount of light for your particular strain if you want to get max THC. Incorporating bright, UV light can also increase THC production by mimicking high altitude growing conditions.

Cheating the System with Plant Training

Say you only have a small, short space but you desperately want to grow tall plants and have them reach their full potential in terms of yield and potency. Is it even possible?

Yes, but it’s going to take a lot more work. It’s a very hands-on process, and the grower needs to be there tending the plants every step of the way. If you just want to plant your weed seeds, let them do their thing, and come back in a few weeks to see how they’re getting on, this method is not for you. Find a bigger space or grow shorter plants.

You’ve really got to be dedicated if you want to grow high-yielding, potent plants in a small space. If that describes you, then here’s how it’s done:

  • One low stress training method is to continually tie down the top of your plants by gently bending them into a loose “L” shape. This allows light to reach all sections of the plant more evenly, and keeps it from growing too tall for your space. Repeat this process as needed, whenever your plants are getting too tall.
  • Sea of Green is a common method to get the most out of short spaces. It works by growing many small plants at a time instead of just a few tall ones. That way, you get the same amount of yield out of shorter plants. With Sea of Green, the plants are made to flower sooner than normal, and are ready to harvest sooner. This method doesn’t require any hands-on plant training, you just need to stay on top of your light cycles to control the flowering.
  • Screen of Green is another low stress method that involves suspending a screen above your plants as a canopy. When your plants get tall enough to poke through the screen, simply tuck the branches down again, weaving them through the screen.
  • Topping is a higher stress method, which just basically involves picking off the top of each plant in order to keep it short and encourage the topmost buds to grow into new branches. It also promotes growth in the lower branches and can be done as many times as necessary during the plant’s vegetative growth state.
  • Stem mutilation, also called super cropping, is another training method somewhere in between low stress and high stress. It’s basically like the first low stress training method, but done without string. Instead of tying the top branches down, you pinch, roll, and squeeze the stem near the top of the plant until it weakens enough to flop over on its own. If you go with this method, be careful not to sever the tops or break the stalk’s skin. You want to be gentle enough that you’re just weakening the structure to the point where it can no longer support the top part of the plant.

If you’re going to go through all of that effort to tend your plants as they grow, you’ll definitely want to start with the best cannabis seeds possible. That way, you’ll get a finished product that’s worth all the time and attention you poured into growing it.
